Leonard J .Cooper owns L.J. Cooper Company, one of the largest green coffee brokerage firms in the North America. He is also President of Harvest Commodities Marketing, Inc., a company that imports psyllium from India. Mr. Cooper founded HCM in December of 1981.
Mr. Cooper is also partners in the Specialty Coffee Division of Coffee America (USA) Corp. Offices of all three firms are in Ardsley, New York, a suburb of New York City.
After graduation from Baruch College, City University of New York in 1977, Mr. Cooper joined Produce Dealers Corporation, a spice and coffee brokerage firm. In 1978, Produce Dealers was sold to Balfour Maclaine International Ltd., a subsidiary of Kay Corporation. Mr. Cooper ran a coffee brokerage division for them until March of 1981, when he established L.J. Cooper Company.
While the coffee industry was consolidating in the late 1980's and 1990's, L.J. Cooper Company expanded its source suppliers and roaster contacts. Under Mr. Cooper’s leadership, this expansion lead to a partnership in 1999 with Coffee America (USA) in the green specialty coffee business. Coffee America (USA) Specialty Coffee Division concentrates on about sixty to eighty qualities from about twenty coffee producing countries.
